The Story
Created by Ulla Procopé in 1960 for the Arabia factory, Valencia is one of the most recognisable designs in Finnish ceramic history. Its distinctive cobalt-blue decoration is hand-painted onto white faience, giving each piece subtle variations in brushwork, line and colour intensity. The ND 5 terrine is one of the larger serving pieces in the Valencia series, combining a generous round body with a domed lid and raised foot. Its bold blue-and-white decoration continues across the entire form, while the hand-painted finish makes every piece subtly individual. Produced by Arabia until 2002, Valencia has become a beloved classic among collectors worldwide.

Ulla Procopé

Ulrika (Ulla) Eleonora Matilda Procopé-Nyman (1921–1968). One of the most influential ceramic designers of Finland's Golden Age of Design, Ulla Procopé devoted her entire professional career to Arabia, where she transformed everyday tableware through timeless forms and exceptional craftsmanship. After graduating from the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1948, she joined Arabia, creating both the shapes and, in many cases, the decorations for her designs. Her work combined clean, functional forms with rich glazes and outstanding durability, making stoneware an essential part of modern Scandinavian living. Among her best-known creations are the hand-painted Valencia collection, inspired by Mediterranean ceramics, and the iconic Ruska stoneware series, whose unique reactive glaze gives every piece an individual character. She also designed celebrated collections including Anemone, Rosmarin, Meri, Liekki and GA, establishing a design language that remains instantly recognisable today. Admired for balancing practicality with warmth and understated elegance, Procopé's work continues to be among the most collected and enduring classics in the history of Finnish ceramics.
