KARHULAN LASI – The industrial powerhouse of Finnish glass


Founded in 1889, Karhulan Lasi grew from a bottle factory on Finland's southeast coast into one of the country's largest and most influential glass manufacturers. From everyday household glass to fine crystal and art glass, the factory played a central role in shaping the Finnish glass industry for more than a century.

  • During the first half of the 20th century, Karhulan Lasi became a driving force behind innovation in Finnish glassmaking. Its investment in new production techniques, crystal manufacturing and large-scale industrial capacity helped establish Finland as a respected glass-producing nation.

  • 1889 – Karhulan Lasitehdas is founded by William Ruth, beginning production of bottles and household glass.

    1899 – Window glass production begins, and the factory rapidly expands its industrial capacity.

    1915 – Karhula becomes part of A. Ahlström Corporation, providing the foundation for decades of growth.

    1932 – Göran Hongell becomes the first designer employed by a Finnish glassworks, marking the beginning of a new era in Finnish glass design.

    1936 – Alvar Aalto wins the Karhula-Iittala glass design competition with the design that would become the world-famous Aalto Vase.

    1937 – The first Aalto Vases are produced at Karhula and presented at the Paris World Exposition, bringing international attention to Finnish design.

    1940s–1950s – Karhula experiences its golden age of art glass with designers such as Göran Hongell, Gunnel Nyman and Lisa Johansson-Pape.

    1946 – Glassblowing for the Karhula-Iittala group is reorganised, with artistic glass production increasingly centred at Iittala while Karhula continues expanding its industrial manufacturing.

    1960s – The factory increasingly focuses on bottle production as demand for packaging glass continues to grow.

    2009 – Glass production at the historic Karhula factory comes to an end, closing one of Finland's longest-running glassworks.

    Today – Karhulan Lasi remains one of the cornerstones of Finnish glass history. Its innovative designs, industrial achievements and exceptional craftsmanship continue to be admired by collectors around the world.

  • Nuutajärvi is Finland's oldest glassworks

    Founded in 1793, Nuutajärvi has been producing glass for more than 230 years, making it Finland's oldest glassworks.

  • The factory was built in the forest

    Early glass furnaces consumed enormous amounts of firewood. That is why Nuutajärvi was established deep in the forests, where timber was plentiful.

  • Nuutajärvi helped shape Finnish design
