Dorrit von Fieandt
Dorrit Margareta von Fieandt (1927–2021). One of Finland's most celebrated ceramic decorators, Dorrit von Fieandt brought colour, poetry and painterly expression to Arabia's tableware through a career spanning more than five decades. Determined to pursue an artistic career despite her family's wishes, she secretly enrolled at the Ateneum School of Drawing at the age of sixteen before continuing her studies at the Institute of Industrial Arts, where she explored textiles, ceramics and graphic design under leading Finnish artists including Arttu Brummer and Birger Kaipiainen. Her broad artistic education shaped a distinctive decorative style characterised by vibrant colours, expressive brushwork and richly detailed floral and botanical motifs. Working both independently and later as a visiting artist at Arabia's Art Department, she created some of the factory's most beloved decorations, including Palermo, Hubertus, Poetic and China Tea. Inspired by gardens, Mediterranean light and the beauty of everyday life, von Fieandt transformed functional ceramics into joyful works of art. Today, her designs remain highly regarded by collectors for their timeless elegance, painterly richness and enduring contribution to Finnish ceramic design.
