Esteri Tomula

Esteri Tomula (1920–1998). A master of delicate detail and vibrant graphic storytelling, Esteri Tomula was one of Arabia’s most beloved ceramic decorators. After studying graphic design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, she joined the Arabia porcelain factory in 1947, where she spent over four decades designing iconic surface patterns. Tomula had a unique gift for turning inspiration from Finnish flora, wild berries, and romantic botanical motifs into intricate, line-drawn decorations that complemented Arabia’s classic shapes. She is celebrated for her rich and expressive patterns, including the famous blue-and-white Esteri pattern created to mark Finland’s 50th anniversary of independence, as well as fan-favorites like Pastoraali, Flora, and Crocus. Tomula’s designs brought joy, playfulness, and a sense of timeless charm to everyday Nordic tableware, making her works highly cherished by collectors around the world.
