Markku Salo (b. 1954). One of the most innovative figures in contemporary Finnish glass art, Markku Salo has built an extraordinary career by combining industrial design with experimental artistic expression. After studying fine art at the Kankaanpää Art School and graduating in industrial design from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1979, he began his career designing consumer electronics for Salora, where he later became Head of Design. In 1983, Salo made a decisive transition to glass, joining the legendary Nuutajärvi Glassworks, where he designed both production glass and unique artworks for nearly a decade. Equally at home in functional design and sculptural art, he created enduring classics such as the Nappi tealight holder, Oliivi glassware and the Aava vase, while his unique works pushed the boundaries of glass through innovative techniques including blowing into metal wire mesh, combining glass with wood and the demanding pâte de verre process. Since establishing his own studio in 1991, Salo has continued to create internationally acclaimed works for companies including Iittala, Arabia, Aarikka and Lundia. His glass is represented in leading museum collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Corning Museum of Glass and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to Finnish design, he received the prestigious Kaj Franck Design Prize in 2015.
