The Story
Designed by Ulla Procopé for the Arabia factory in 1960, this "Valencia" series pitcher is made of faience and remained in production until 2002. This piece is a valuable addition to any collection, offering a stable investment value as part of the master traditions of Finnish ceramics. The series is technically defined by its hand-painted deep cobalt blue pattern, making each piece unique in the intensity and detail of its brushwork. Procopé drew inspiration from Spanish ceramics, combining functional and slightly rustic forms with a bold geometric decor, representing one of the last large-scale, hand-finished series produced on the Arabia factory lines.

Ulla Procopé

Ulrika (Ulla) Eleonora Matilda Procopé-Nyman (1921–1968). One of the most influential ceramic designers of Finland's Golden Age of Design, Ulla Procopé devoted her entire professional career to Arabia, where she transformed everyday tableware through timeless forms and exceptional craftsmanship. After graduating from the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1948, she joined Arabia, creating both the shapes and, in many cases, the decorations for her designs. Her work combined clean, functional forms with rich glazes and outstanding durability, making stoneware an essential part of modern Scandinavian living. Among her best-known creations are the hand-painted Valencia collection, inspired by Mediterranean ceramics, and the iconic Ruska stoneware series, whose unique reactive glaze gives every piece an individual character. She also designed celebrated collections including Anemone, Rosmarin, Meri, Liekki and GA, establishing a design language that remains instantly recognisable today. Admired for balancing practicality with warmth and understated elegance, Procopé's work continues to be among the most collected and enduring classics in the history of Finnish ceramics.
