Theodor Käppi

Theodor Käppi (1902–1972). One of Finland's finest master engravers, Theodor Käppi played a vital role in the development of artistic glass at Iittala during the mid-20th century. After studying glass engraving in Germany, he joined Iittala in the 1930s, where his exceptional craftsmanship earned him a reputation as one of the factory's leading engravers. Working closely with many of Finland's foremost designers, Käppi translated complex artistic ideas into flawlessly executed engraved glass while also creating refined designs of his own. His work is distinguished by precise craftsmanship, elegant proportions and a deep understanding of glass as both a decorative and artistic material. Although less widely known than many of the designers whose works he helped realise, Käppi's contribution was fundamental to the international success of Finnish art glass and remains highly respected by collectors and historians alike.
