The Story

Created by Ulla Procopé in 1960 for the Arabia factory, "Valencia" is an undisputed icon of the ceramic world that refuses to blend into the crowd. The ND 3 teacup and saucer included in this exclusive set represent the grandest and most generous form of the Valencia series. The deep, dramatic cobalt blue pattern is applied freehand onto durable faience, making every brushstroke, line thickness, and color intensity completely unique. This is not merely a utility item, but a tribute to bold craftsmanship—the painter's initials found on the base, alongside the designer's signature, confirm that each cup lives a truly individual life. Boasting a luxurious and powerful character, "Valencia" brings provocative energy into any interior and dominates the room with uncompromising style. In today's auctions and design connoisseur circles, such beautifully preserved sets are highly prized, offering a delight to lovers of bold contemporary design while serving as an absolute eye-catcher on any table as a value-appreciating design piece.

Ulla Procopé

Ulrika (Ulla) Eleonora Matilda Procopé-Nyman (1921–1968). A titan of Finnish mid-century design, Ulrika "Ulla" Procopé was one of the most significant and commercially successful creators in the history of the Arabia Art Department. Graduating from the Central School of Applied Arts in 1948, she spent her entire, highly influential career at Arabia. Procopé was a master at merging practical, everyday utility with a soulful, organic aesthetic. She is the visionary mind behind two of Finland's most recognizable tableware icons: the hand-painted, cobalt-blue Valencia series (1960) and the rugged, flameproof Ruska stoneware collection (1961), which utilized a groundbreaking matte glaze that made every single mass-produced piece unique. Her focus on functional elegance, thermal durability, and timeless warmth redefined modern Scandinavian kitchenware, cementing her legacy as a designer whose works remain beloved staples in homes and prized treasures for collectors worldwide.
