The Story
Introduced in the early 1970s, Nuppu is one of Raija Uosikkinen's most cheerful and colourful tableware decorations. Meaning "flower bud" in Finnish, the pattern features bold stylised blossoms, vivid cobalt blue, soft violet and bright yellow accents, reflecting the optimistic spirit of 1970s Scandinavian design. The decoration was applied to the elegant ND form, whose clean, timeless lines provide the perfect canvas for Uosikkinen's expressive floral artwork. Produced using durable underglaze silk-screen printing, the decoration has retained its crisp colours and fine details for decades. Manufactured for only a relatively short period, Nuppu is today regarded as one of Raija Uosikkinen's most distinctive decorative patterns, admired for its joyful design and highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Raija Uosikkinen

Raija Liisa Uosikkinen (1923–2004). One of the most influential pattern designers in Finnish ceramics, Raija Uosikkinen transformed Arabia's functional tableware into timeless works of art through her distinctive illustrations. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1947, she joined Arabia, where she spent nearly four decades creating decorative patterns that combined storytelling, folklore and everyday life with exceptional artistic precision. One of her earliest major assignments was decorating Kaj Franck's groundbreaking B-form tableware, leading to celebrated designs such as Linnea, Polaris and Pellervo. She later created many of Arabia's most beloved decorations, including Emilia, Pomona, Ali and the celebrated Kalevala annual wall plates. Characterised by delicate linework, rich ornamentation and a remarkable sense of narrative, Uosikkinen's designs brought warmth and personality to everyday ceramics. Today, her work remains among the most admired in Finnish design, treasured by collectors for its artistic beauty, timeless charm and enduring contribution to Arabia's legacy.
