The Story
Created by Raija Uosikkinen for Arabia, Jupiter is a distinctive example of the space-age influence that entered Finnish ceramic design in the 1950s and 1960s. Applied to the streamlined X-model pitcher designed by Kaj Franck, the Jupiter decoration follows the curved form naturally while the fine brown line along the rim adds a precise finishing detail. The combination of Franck's restrained functional form and Uosikkinen's expressive decoration creates a particularly harmonious example of mid-century Finnish ceramic design. With its distinctive decoration and connection to two of Finland's most celebrated designers, this pitcher is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Raija Uosikkinen
Raija Liisa Uosikkinen (1923–2004). One of the most influential pattern designers in Finnish ceramics, Raija Uosikkinen transformed Arabia's functional tableware into timeless works of art through her distinctive illustrations. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1947, she joined Arabia, where she spent nearly four decades creating decorative patterns that combined storytelling, folklore and everyday life with exceptional artistic precision. One of her earliest major assignments was decorating Kaj Franck's groundbreaking B-form tableware, leading to celebrated designs such as Linnea, Polaris and Pellervo. She later created many of Arabia's most beloved decorations, including Emilia, Pomona, Ali and the celebrated Kalevala annual wall plates. Characterised by delicate linework, rich ornamentation and a remarkable sense of narrative, Uosikkinen's designs brought warmth and personality to everyday ceramics. Today, her work remains among the most admired in Finnish design, treasured by collectors for its artistic beauty, timeless charm and enduring contribution to Arabia's legacy.
