The Story
Created by Raija Uosikkinen between 1957 and 1968, the "Emilia" series box (model IS) is a classic of the Arabia factory’s narrative design, combining Kaj Franck’s functional form with Uosikkinen’s delicate graphics. This object represents a worthy investment, embodying the continuity and craftsmanship of Nordic design history. The series was inspired by the artist's childhood memories of a glamorous "American aunt," whose letters and stories created an idyllic image of a carefree Western lifestyle that she later immortalized in her work.

Raija Uosikkinen
Raija Liisa Uosikkinen (1923 – 2004). If Arabia’s mid-century ceramics had a soul of joy, it was shaped by Raija Uosikkinen. For nearly forty years, she was the factory’s master of pattern, known for her ability to wrap functional objects in whimsy and storytelling. While she famously collaborated with Kaj Franck to decorate his minimalist forms, she is perhaps best loved for her Emilia and Kalevala series. Her intricate, fine-lined illustrations turned everyday plates and cups into miniature canvases, capturing the essence of Finnish folklore and the charm of daily life.
