The Story
Created by Raija Uosikkinen between 1957 and 1968, the "Emilia" series box (model IS) is a classic of the Arabia factory’s narrative design, combining Kaj Franck’s functional form with Uosikkinen’s delicate graphics. This object represents a worthy investment, embodying the continuity and craftsmanship of Nordic design history. The series was inspired by the artist's childhood memories of a glamorous "American aunt," whose letters and stories created an idyllic image of a carefree Western lifestyle that she later immortalized in her work.

Raija Uosikkinen
Raija Liisa Uosikkinen (1923–2004). One of the most influential pattern designers in Finnish ceramics, Raija Uosikkinen transformed Arabia's functional tableware into timeless works of art through her distinctive illustrations. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1947, she joined Arabia, where she spent nearly four decades creating decorative patterns that combined storytelling, folklore and everyday life with exceptional artistic precision. One of her earliest major assignments was decorating Kaj Franck's groundbreaking B-form tableware, leading to celebrated designs such as Linnea, Polaris and Pellervo. She later created many of Arabia's most beloved decorations, including Emilia, Pomona, Ali and the celebrated Kalevala annual wall plates. Characterised by delicate linework, rich ornamentation and a remarkable sense of narrative, Uosikkinen's designs brought warmth and personality to everyday ceramics. Today, her work remains among the most admired in Finnish design, treasured by collectors for its artistic beauty, timeless charm and enduring contribution to Arabia's legacy.
