Arttu Brummer
Kaarle Arttu Brummer-Korvenkontio (1891 – 1951). One of the most influential figures in Finnish applied arts, Arttu Brummer shaped the course of twentieth-century design both through his own work and through the generations of designers he educated. After graduating as a furniture designer, he established his own design studio in 1913 before joining the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, where he taught for more than three decades and became Artistic Director in 1944. At a time when functionalism was transforming European design, Brummer remained a leading advocate of refined craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from Art Deco and Nordic Classicism. He designed prestigious interiors for landmarks including the Finnish Parliament House and the University of Helsinki, while his collaborations with Karhulan Lasi and Riihimäen Lasi produced a remarkable body of unique art glass. Among his best-known works is the sculptural Finlandia vase, created for composer Jean Sibelius on his 80th birthday in 1945. Beyond his own designs, Brummer's greatest legacy lies in his role as a teacher and mentor, helping to shape many of the designers who would define the golden age of Finnish design. Today, his work is admired for its architectural clarity, exceptional craftsmanship and enduring influence on Nordic decorative arts.
