Arttu Brummer
Kaarle Arttu Brummer-Korvenkontio (1891 – 1951). Often called the "fiery soul" of Finnish applied arts, Arttu Brummer was a monumental figure who shaped the golden generation of Nordic design. Rather than following the strict, functionalist minimalism of his contemporary Alvar Aalto, Brummer championed a sophisticated blend of Art Deco elegance and 1920s classicism. He designed grand interiors—including furniture for the Finnish Parliament House—but his artistic brilliance truly shone in his heavy, sculptural art glass for Karhula and Riihimäki. His absolute masterpiece is the angular Finlandia vase (1945), designed as a birthday gift for Jean Sibelius to capture the rugged beauty of the Finnish landscape. As the longtime artistic director of the central art school, Brummer mentored almost every major Finnish designer of the mid-20th century, leaving an indelible mark on the nation's aesthetic identity.
