Yrjö Rosola
Yrjö Rosola (1904–1989). One of Finland's pioneering sculptors in architectural glass, Yrjö Rosola transformed glass relief into a powerful medium for public art. Trained as a sculptor at the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, he began his career assisting renowned sculptor Gunnar Finne before establishing his own artistic practice. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Rosola created monumental glass reliefs, sculptures and architectural commissions that united sculpture, light and architecture in entirely new ways. His works for churches, hospitals, banks and public buildings demonstrated an exceptional ability to give solid glass depth, movement and expressive narrative. Alongside his artistic career, Rosola spent nearly four decades teaching modelling and sculpture, eventually serving as Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Industrial Arts, where he influenced generations of Finnish designers and sculptors. Honoured as an honorary member of both the Finnish Sculptors' Association and Ornamo, Rosola remains one of the key pioneers who established architectural glass as an important artistic medium in Finland.
