The Story
The ceramic bird "Lisa" from the Parvi series, designed by American-born artist Howard Smith and produced by Arabia in the 1990s, is a distinctive example of playful Finnish ceramic design. Slip-cast and glazed, this sculptural piece catches the eye with its generously rounded body, small head and characteristic single conical foot. Unlike traditional animal figures, the Parvi series does not depict birds realistically. Instead, Smith reduced their forms to bold sculptural silhouettes, giving each bird its own name and individual personality. With its remarkably simple horizontal form, Lisa sits somewhere between a playful bird figure and an abstract ceramic sculpture. With its distinctive artistic expression and unmistakable character, Lisa has become a desirable example of Howard Smith's ceramic design and is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Howard Smith
Howard Smith (1928–2021). One of the most distinctive voices in modern Finnish design, Howard Smith brought an entirely new visual perspective to Scandinavian art through his vibrant colours, bold forms and multidisciplinary approach. Born in Moorestown, New Jersey, he moved to Finland in 1962, where he built a remarkable career spanning ceramics, textiles, painting, sculpture, printmaking and public art. As one of the very few Black designers to establish a successful career in Nordic design, Smith developed a highly personal artistic language that combined the clarity of Scandinavian modernism with expressive rhythm, movement and colour. He designed memorable textile collections for Vallila Interiors and created ceramic tableware and sculptural figures for Arabia, while simultaneously producing paintings, assemblages and monumental public artworks throughout Finland. Between 1988 and 1995 he worked together with ceramic artist Erna Aaltonen in their Arteos studio before continuing his independent artistic practice in Fiskars. Awarded the Finnish State Prize for Design in 2001, Smith remains celebrated as an artist who expanded the visual language of Finnish design through his originality, humanity and fearless creativity. Today, his works are represented in major museum collections in Finland and internationally, reflecting a legacy that reaches far beyond any single discipline.
