The Story
Howard Smith’s 1990s "Camilla" antelope, designed for the Arabia factory, is part of the iconic "Runfree" series, which broke away from Arabia’s tradition of realistic animal figurines. This modernist sculpture stands out with its soft flowing forms, minimalist details, and elegant neck, making it one of the most visually impactful and sought-after pieces in the "Runfree" collection. As the series was produced for a limited period, "Camilla" has become a prized rarity among collectors, with its market value steadily rising. Due to its sculptural form, historical significance, and stable demand among design enthusiasts, this piece offers collectors long-term investment value.

Howard Smith

Howard Smith (1928–2021) was a vibrant, multifaceted force who brought a splash of African-American energy to the Finnish design scene. Moving to Finland in the 1960s, he became a celebrated artist, designer, and sculptor, known for his bold use of primary colors and striking silhouettes. His collaboration with Vallila resulted in iconic, large-scale textile prints, while his ceramic birds and figures for Arabia radiate a sense of rhythm and joy. Smith’s work is a masterful fusion of modern minimalism and soulful, expressive storytelling that remains timelessly cool.
