The Story
Created by Finnish designer Oiva Toikka, whose imaginative approach transformed glass into a world of colour, movement and storytelling, Liivia was produced at Nuutajärvi in 2010 as a special commission for Suuri Suomalainen Kirjakerho (SSKK). The lemon-yellow bird has a clear head containing delicate brown flecks and a glossy black beak, giving it a bright yet refined character. Liivia was created together with the smaller Lillukka in the same year, forming a distinctive pair of SSKK birds. Both were produced as limited editions of 300 numbered pieces, with each bird individually free-blown and shaped by hand. The clear head reveals the subtle brown granules within the glass, while the yellow body has a gently contrasting surface structure that gives the bird added depth. These details show Toikka's ability to create lively character through relatively simple means. A distinctive piece for collectors of Oiva Toikka and Birds by Toikka.
