The Story
Created by Finnish designer Oiva Toikka, whose imaginative approach transformed glass into a world of colour, movement and storytelling, Kirjatiira was produced at Nuutajärvi in 2011 as a special commission for Suuri Suomalainen Kirjakerho (SSKK). Known internationally as the Book Tern, the bird combines a blue body with flowing gold and silver swirls, a dark clear head and a lustrous beak. Kirjatiira reflects Toikka's fascination with birds as both natural subjects and sculptural forms. Free-blown and shaped by hand, its layered glass and swirling decoration create depth and movement across the body. Produced as a limited edition of 400 numbered pieces, Kirjatiira is one of the distinctive birds created for SSKK and carries the book club's connection to Finnish glass design into Toikka's imaginative world of birds.
