The Story
Designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1951 for Iittala, the Hiidenkirnu series was inspired by the dramatic potholes carved into Finnish bedrock by glacial meltwater and stones. These natural formations provided Sarpaneva with a starting point for a group of sculptural glass objects in which geological forms were transformed into abstract compositions of mass, texture and light. Produced at Iittala from 1952 to 1960, the series belongs to the early period in which Sarpaneva established his distinctive approach to art glass. Hiidennyrkki, model 3530, was the first of the works in the group and is one of Sarpaneva's earliest art objects created after joining Iittala. Its name, meaning “Devil's Fist”, refers to the compact, powerful form of the sculpture. The model was produced in two sizes, with its thick glass body and irregular opening emphasising the impression of a naturally formed stone cavity. Hiidennyrkki is one of the defining works of the Hiidenkirnu series and an important example of Sarpaneva's early art glass. Its sculptural form and connection with the Finnish landscape make it particularly sought after by collectors.

Timo Sarpaneva

Timo Tapani Sarpaneva (1926–2006). One of the most influential figures in 20th-century Finnish design, Timo Sarpaneva transformed glass into an expressive artistic medium while helping establish Finland's international reputation for modern design. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1948, he joined Iittala in 1950, where his experimental approach led to groundbreaking innovations in both artistic and industrial glass. Working closely with master glassblowers, he developed pioneering techniques such as the steam-blown i-line collection and created enduring classics including the Festivo candleholders, Orchid, Kajakki, Finlandia, and the cast-iron pot that became a design icon in its own right. Beyond glass, Sarpaneva designed textiles, porcelain, metalware and exhibition architecture, while his famous red i logo became the enduring symbol of Iittala. Winner of multiple Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennale, the Pro Finlandia Medal and numerous international honours, Sarpaneva remains celebrated for combining technical innovation, sculptural form and the changing qualities of light into timeless works that continue to define Finnish design.
