The Story
Introduced in 1984, Claritas is one of Timo Sarpaneva's most distinctive glass series, exploring the relationship between light, transparency and sculptural form. Named after the Latin word for clarity, the collection reflects Sarpaneva's fascination with the optical possibilities of crystal. Rather than decorating the surface, the C846 vase reveals its beauty from within. Encased inside the crystal, the delicate botanical motif appears to float in space, changing in depth and character as light passes through the glass and the viewing angle shifts. Produced by Iittala using one of the company's most technically demanding crystal-making processes of the period, Claritas is regarded as one of the defining achievements of Timo Sarpaneva's later career and is highly appreciated by collectors worldwide.

Timo Sarpaneva

Timo Tapani Sarpaneva (1926–2006). One of the most influential figures in 20th-century Finnish design, Timo Sarpaneva transformed glass into an expressive artistic medium while helping establish Finland's international reputation for modern design. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1948, he joined Iittala in 1950, where his experimental approach led to groundbreaking innovations in both artistic and industrial glass. Working closely with master glassblowers, he developed pioneering techniques such as the steam-blown i-line collection and created enduring classics including the Festivo candleholders, Orchid, Kajakki, Finlandia, and the cast-iron pot that became a design icon in its own right. Beyond glass, Sarpaneva designed textiles, porcelain, metalware and exhibition architecture, while his famous red i logo became the enduring symbol of Iittala. Winner of multiple Grand Prix awards at the Milan Triennale, the Pro Finlandia Medal and numerous international honours, Sarpaneva remains celebrated for combining technical innovation, sculptural form and the changing qualities of light into timeless works that continue to define Finnish design.
