Aimo Okkolin
Aimo Olavi Okkolin (1917–1982). One of Finland's greatest masters of cut crystal, Aimo Okkolin transformed the art of glass through exceptional craftsmanship, technical innovation and an extraordinary understanding of light. Born into a family closely connected with the glass industry in Riihimäki, he joined Riihimäen Lasi at the age of thirteen. Although he received no formal artistic education, his remarkable talent led him from office work to crystal cutting, where he mastered the demanding techniques of engraving, cutting and polishing before becoming one of the factory's most celebrated designers. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Okkolin personally cut and finished both his unique artworks and production prototypes, giving his creations an unmistakable precision and brilliance. Inspired by nature, particularly the water lilies of a lake near Hämeenlinna, he developed both the iconic Lumpeenkukka (Water Lily) bowl and an innovative grinding technique that made its thick-walled crystal form possible. Introduced in 1960, Lumpeenkukka became Riihimäen Lasi's best-selling individual design and remains one of the defining masterpieces of Finnish crystal. Okkolin's works were admired not only by collectors but also at the highest state level, with his crystal creations selected as official diplomatic gifts by the Finnish presidency. Today, his boldly sculpted bowls, vases and art objects continue to be celebrated for their technical excellence, timeless elegance and remarkable ability to capture light within solid crystal.
