The Story
Hubertus was one of Dorrit von Fieandt's final creations for Arabia's Pro Arte programme, developed over several years from 1993 onwards. The series takes its name from Saint Hubert, the medieval Bishop of Maastricht, who, according to legend, encountered a white stag with a crucifix between its antlers while hunting. Hubert became associated with hunting and has been depicted as its patron saint in Northern European art since the Renaissance. The Hubertus sauce boat with lid was introduced in 1994, alongside the fox-hunting tureen and plates. Its richly detailed decoration combines imagery of nature and hunting with Dorrit von Fieandt's distinctive artistic language. The Hubertus decoration was created using serigraphy, with colours transferred separately to the ceramic surface, while the sauce boat and tureen were also partly hand-painted according to the artist's instructions. The series continued to develop over the following years and was completed in 1999 with the final fish plate.

Dorrit von Fieandt

Dorrit Margareta von Fieandt (1927–2021) was one of the most distinctive ceramic artists of the Arabia Art Department, known for her expressive forms, richly painted surfaces and highly individual approach to industrial ceramics. Determined to pursue an artistic career despite her family’s wishes, she secretly enrolled at the Ateneum School of Drawing at the age of sixteen. She later continued her studies at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, where she explored textiles, ceramics and graphic design under leading Finnish artists including Arttu Brummer and Birger Kaipiainen. Von Fieandt worked independently for much of her career, developing large-scale unique ceramic works whose organic forms and richly painted decorations became her signature. In 1986, after nearly four decades as an independent artist, she was invited to Arabia as a guest artist. What began as a planned six-month stay eventually lasted until 1998, opening a remarkable new chapter in her career. Working closely with the factory, she created hundreds of unique works, prototypes for Pro Arte series and designs for industrial production. Her approach to tableware was equally innovative. Rather than developing every new service from scratch, she proposed adapting existing forms with new decorations, dramatically reducing development costs while giving familiar shapes a new identity. Her designs for bowls, pitchers, terrines and plates brought together functional form and richly hand-painted imagery, demonstrating how artistic individuality could thrive within industrial production. Today, von Fieandt’s ceramics remain highly regarded by collectors for their individuality, painterly richness and remarkable ability to unite Finnish functionalism with the expressive freedom of the artist’s hand.
