The Story
Oiva Toikka’s 1994 "Vuorileppälintu" (Mountain Redstart) is one of the most artistically distinctive models in the "Birds by Toikka" collection, standing out from classic glossy birds with its technically demanding matte finish. This masterpiece combines matte and glossy surfaces, creating a bold visual contrast between the reddish body, the black "vest," and the white details, reflecting Toikka’s bold stylistic explorations in the 1990s. As it was produced for a limited period and is found on the secondary market far less frequently than standard "Birds by Toikka" pieces, it is highly valued by collectors. Due to its rarity, unique finish, and the rising value of Oiva Toikka’s work on the design market, this piece offers collectors long-term investment value.

Oiva Toikka

Oiva Kalervo Toikka (1931 – 2019) was the great rebel of Finnish design, famously choosing exuberant color and whimsical shapes over the strict minimalism of his peers. While his Kastehelmi (Dewdrop) and Flora tableware became instant classics, his most legendary achievement is the Birds by Toikka collection. Starting in 1972, he created a mesmerizing flock of over 400 mouth-blown glass birds, each a unique masterpiece of imagination and craftsmanship. Toikka’s work is a celebration of joy, reminding us that design can be both world-class and wonderfully playful.
