The Story
Created by Kerttu Nurminen in 1998 for the Nuutajärvi Pro Arte collection, the "Palazzo" series stands as one of the designer's most technically complex and artistically mature works. Crafted using the filigree technique, where colored glass threads are fused into the glass mass, this vase demonstrates the highest level of glassblowing mastery, achieving a geometrically precise grid through demanding manual labor. As part of the Nuutajärvi art glass program with a limited production period (approx. 1998–2001), "Palazzo" pieces are highly regarded in design collections and offer long-term investment value. The silhouette and regular pattern of the piece reflect the elegance of Italian glass traditions combined with Nordic technical precision.

Kerttu Nurminen

Kerttu Anneli Nurminen (b. 1943). One of Finland's most accomplished glass artists and designers, Kerttu Nurminen devoted 35 years to Nuutajärvi Glassworks, eventually becoming its last full-time salaried designer. After studying ceramics under Kaj Franck at the University of Industrial Arts Helsinki, she graduated in 1970 and joined Nuutajärvi soon afterwards, initially as a summer trainee and later working in several roles while beginning to design glass alongside her other duties. Franck subsequently recruited her to the design team, beginning a remarkable career that would span both functional glassware and highly acclaimed unique works. Her best-known collections, including Mondo, Verna and Palazzo, have become enduring classics of Finnish glass, while her studio pieces demonstrate exceptional mastery of demanding techniques such as Graal, filigree and veil glass. Known for her refined compositions, versatility and uncompromising approach to quality, Nurminen drew particular inspiration from the nature and changing seasons of Nuutajärvi. Over five decades, she worked closely with glassblowers and other craftspeople, continually exploring new ways to express the sensitivity and strength of glass. Her works are represented in major museum collections in Finland and abroad, including the Design Museum Finland, the Finnish Glass Museum, the National Museum of Norway and the Victoria and Albert Museum, securing her place among the leading figures of Finnish glass design.
