Anja Jaatinen-Winquist

Anja Jaatinen-Winquist (1934–2015). One of Arabia's most accomplished form designers, Anja Jaatinen-Winquist played an important role in shaping Finnish tableware during the second half of the twentieth century. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, she joined Arabia, where she spent nearly twenty years creating functional ceramic forms that combined understated elegance with everyday practicality. Her designs reflected the Nordic ideal that beauty should be found in well-balanced proportions, honest materials and objects made to be used for generations. She is best known for designing the Karelia tableware series, introduced in the mid-1960s, whose distinctive rustic decoration by Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist perfectly complemented Jaatinen-Winquist's simple, durable forms. Beyond Karelia, her work helped define Arabia's reputation for timeless, user-centred design that balanced craftsmanship with modern living. Today, her designs remain highly regarded by collectors for their timeless functionality, understated elegance and enduring contribution to Finnish ceramic design.
