The Story
Created in 1965, Pastoraali is one of Esteri Tomula's most beloved decorative designs and a true classic of Arabia ceramics. Inspired by pastoral poetry, the composition brings together human figures, birds, flowers, foliage and other elements of nature in a richly detailed, almost storybook-like world. Fine black linework and rich cobalt blue give the decoration its distinctive character. On the 308-1 vase, Tomula's intricate illustration unfolds across the rounded surface, while the compact, softly curved form provides a quiet contrast to the richness of the decoration. The result is a particularly harmonious balance between functional form and expressive artwork. Produced from 1965 to 1969, the 308-1 vase is less commonly encountered than many of the Pastoraali tableware pieces. Its combination of Tomula's celebrated artwork, distinctive vase form and limited production period makes it highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Esteri Tomula
Esteri Tomula (1920–1998). One of Finland's most celebrated ceramic decorators, Esteri Tomula transformed everyday tableware into richly illustrated works of art through her extraordinary talent for pattern and colour. After studying graphic design at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, she joined Arabia in 1947, where she spent nearly four decades creating decorative designs that became enduring classics of Finnish ceramics. Working closely with Kaj Franck and other leading form designers, Tomula developed a distinctive artistic language inspired by wildflowers, berries, herbs and the changing seasons of the Nordic landscape. Her signature technique combined finely screen-printed black outlines with vibrant hand-painted colours, giving her decorations exceptional depth and character. Among her best-known creations are Pastoraali, Krokus, Fennica and the beloved Esteri pattern, originally introduced in 1973 and reissued in 2017 to celebrate the centenary of Finland's independence. Through her remarkable ability to combine botanical precision with warmth and imagination, Tomula brought beauty and storytelling into everyday life. Today, her ceramics remain among Arabia's most treasured creations, admired by collectors worldwide for their timeless elegance, artistic richness and unmistakable Nordic character.
