The Story
Designed by Kaj Franck in 1957 for Arabia, KF1 is a distinctive serving piece built around a square form and four recessed sections. The design reflects Franck's characteristic approach to functionalism, in which form was reduced to its essential elements while remaining practical and visually expressive. KF1 was also among Franck's works exhibited at the 1957 Milan Triennale, where he was awarded the Grand Prix. The original KF1 was produced from 1958 to 1962. The model was revived in 1990–1991 as part of Arabia's Pro Arte production, and later returned to production from 2005 to 2017. During this final period, the piece was presented under the name Lokerovati, while KF1 remained the model designation. The three production periods therefore refer to the same Kaj Franck design, rather than to three different models. Today, KF1 is especially interesting as a design that was produced in distinct periods while retaining its original form. The later Lokerovati designation can therefore be understood as part of the model's production history, making the piece particularly interesting to collectors tracing the evolution of Franck's design across different eras.

Kaj Franck
Kaj Gabriel Franck (1911–1989). Widely regarded as the conscience of Finnish design, Kaj Franck transformed the way people think about everyday objects by proving that beauty could be found in simplicity, functionality and honest materials. After graduating from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, he worked across ceramics, glass, textiles and industrial design before becoming one of the leading creative figures at Arabia, where he established the Product Design Department and redefined the company's approach to modern tableware. Rejecting unnecessary decoration, Franck believed that objects should be versatile, affordable and designed to serve everyday life rather than fashion. His revolutionary Kilta tableware, introduced in 1953 and later reimagined as Teema, became one of the most influential dinnerware collections ever produced, while his timeless Kartio glassware remains a benchmark of Scandinavian design. Alongside his work for Arabia, Iittala, Nuutajärvi and Artek, Franck served for more than two decades as Artistic Director of Nuutajärvi Glassworks and played a pivotal role in reforming Finnish design education, inspiring generations of designers through his philosophy that design is not an object, but the solution to a problem. Awarded the titles of Professor and Artist Professor, Franck is recognised as one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century design, whose ideas about sustainability, functionality and timeless form continue to shape Finnish design today.
