Orvokki Laine
A distinctive figure of Finnish ceramic design, Orvokki “Okki” Laine became closely associated with Kupittaan Savi, where she created a wide range of practical and decorative ceramics during the company's most influential decades. Working primarily with red clay, she designed bowls, vases, trays, candleholders and other everyday objects whose simple forms provided a canvas for expressive hand-painted decoration. Her work also extended beyond ceramics to the charming wooden dolls dressed in Finnish national costumes, which became among her most recognisable creations. Laine's designs were appreciated internationally, receiving a silver medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954 and a gold medal at an exhibition in Sacramento in 1960. Her approach combined functional forms with carefully considered decoration, reflecting Kupittaan Savi's ambition to make attractive, accessible objects for everyday life. Later in her career, Laine also worked as a visual arts teacher. Today, her ceramics are valued for their distinctive Finnish character, handcrafted quality and connection to the creative culture of Kupittaan Savi.
