Sirkku Kumela-Lehtonen
Sirkku Kumela-Lehtonen (1933-2025) was the creative force behind Kumela glassworks and one of Finland's most important designers of functional glass. Born into the Kumela family in Riihimäki, she studied ceramics at the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki before joining the family-owned glassworks in 1955 as its first full-time designer. For more than two decades she shaped Kumela's identity through hundreds of practical yet elegant designs, creating pitchers, bowls, vases, decanters and tableware that brought colour and durability into everyday Finnish homes. Rather than pursuing exclusive art glass, Kumela-Lehtonen focused on beautifully made objects intended for daily use, becoming a leading advocate of accessible Finnish design. Her most celebrated creation, a series of graceful glass candlesticks originally designed for her own wedding in 1957, remained in production for decades and became one of Kumela's greatest commercial successes. Recognised for her soft organic forms, vibrant colours and masterful use of opal glass, her work continues to be appreciated for its warmth, functionality and enduring place in the history of Finnish glass design.
