Heikki Orvola

Heikki Lauri Kalevi Orvola (b. 1943). One of Finland's most versatile and celebrated designers, Heikki Orvola has spent more than five decades shaping modern Nordic design across glass, ceramics, textiles and industrial design. After studying ceramics at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, he was invited by Kaj Franck to join Nuutajärvi Glassworks in 1968, launching an extraordinary career that would later extend to Arabia, Iittala, Marimekko and numerous international manufacturers. Equally accomplished in unique studio pieces and industrial production, Orvola has created some of Finland's most enduring design classics, including the Aurora, Miranda, Helmi and Herttua glass collections, the iconic Kivi candleholder, and the 24h tableware series for Arabia. His artistic language is defined by refined forms, exceptional sensitivity to colour and light, and a deep understanding of each material's unique character. International collaborations with renowned glass artists, including Lino Tagliapietra, together with studies at the Pilchuck Glass School, further expanded his expressive approach to glass. Awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal, the Kaj Franck Design Prize, and numerous international honours, Orvola is widely regarded as one of the great masters of contemporary Finnish design. His works are represented in leading museum collections worldwide, where they continue to exemplify the quiet elegance, technical mastery and timeless functionality of Nordic design.
