Göran Hongell
Hans Göran Andreas Hongell (1902–1973). One of the founding figures of modern Finnish glass design, Göran Hongell was among the first professionally trained designers to be permanently employed by a Finnish glassworks. After graduating as a decorative painter from the Central School of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1922, he initially worked in graphic design and decorative painting before joining Karhula Glassworks as an artistic adviser in 1932. Over the next twenty-five years, he became one of the key figures behind the artistic development of Karhula-Iittala and, after the Second World War, served as Artistic Director of the entire A. Ahlström glass division. Beyond creating his own elegant tableware and decorative glass, Hongell played a crucial role in transforming the ideas of other designers into successful production pieces, helping bring works by Aino Aalto, Gunnel Nyman and Alvar Aalto into manufacture. His own masterpiece, the Aarne glassware collection, designed in 1948, combined refined proportions, mouth-blown craftsmanship and a solid base to create one of the defining classics of Scandinavian tableware. Awarded a Gold Medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale, Aarne remains in production today as one of the world's longest-running glassware collections. Through both his own designs and his technical expertise, Hongell played a decisive role in establishing the international reputation of Finnish glass.
