The Story
Designed by Finnish ceramic artist Birger Kaipiainen, Elegance/4 was created for Arabia's Pro Arte collection in the 1980s. The Elegance series consists of six numbered decorative plates, each featuring its own richly detailed floral or botanical composition. Elegance/4 is centred around deep blue and violet pansies, surrounded by smaller flowers and intricate dotted details. The lustrous glaze gives the decoration a subtle iridescent quality, allowing the colours to shift gently as the plate is viewed from different angles. The plate reflects Kaipiainen's unmistakable decorative style, where intricate floral motifs and richly worked surfaces come together in a distinctive ornamental composition. A distinctive piece for collectors of Birger Kaipiainen and Finnish ceramic art.

Birger Kaipiainen
Birger Johannes Kaipiainen (1915–1988). Widely known as the "Prince of Ceramics," Birger Kaipiainen was one of Finland's most imaginative and influential ceramic artists, creating a poetic world unlike anything else in Nordic design. After studying at the Central School of Industrial Arts under Arttu Brummer, he joined Arabia's Art Department in 1937, where he spent almost his entire career. Having contracted polio as a child, Kaipiainen was unable to work on a potter's wheel, a limitation that led him to develop his own distinctive artistic language of hand-built forms enriched with abundant ornament, applied ceramic beads and richly textured relief surfaces. Inspired by flowers - especially violets - along with birds, butterflies, fruits and classical decorative traditions, he created thousands of unique ceramic artworks that celebrated beauty, fantasy and the natural world. Between 1954 and 1958 he worked for Rörstrand in Sweden, where his increasingly expressive style gained international recognition. While his monumental wall reliefs and sculptural works earned major international awards - including the Grand Prix for his celebrated Pearl Bird (Helmilintu) at the Milan Triennale - he also created some of Arabia's most beloved tableware, including Paratiisi, Apila and Sunnuntai. Today, Kaipiainen's work is admired worldwide for its extraordinary imagination, technical brilliance and enduring influence on Finnish ceramic art.
