Kati Tuominen-Niittylä
Kati Tuominen-Niittylä (b. 1947). One of Finland's most accomplished contemporary ceramic artists, Kati Tuominen-Niittylä has built an exceptional career balancing sculptural studio ceramics with innovative industrial design. After graduating from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1976, she established her own studio before joining the Arabia Art Department, where she worked from 1980 to 2003. Her work is characterised by timeless vessel forms, restrained silhouettes and richly textured surfaces that evoke weathered stone, ancient ceramics and the quiet beauty of natural materials. Alongside her acclaimed unique artworks, Tuominen-Niittylä designed memorable products including Arabia's playful Storybirds pitchers, whose sculptural bird-shaped spouts transformed everyday porcelain into expressive design, and Iittala's elegant Gluck handleless pitchers. She also collaborated on the Domino and Koko tableware collections, further expanding her influence on contemporary Finnish design. Internationally recognised for her artistic achievements, she won the Grand Prix at the International Ceramic Festival Mino in Japan in 1998 and returned in 2002 to receive the festival's Gold Medal for her work Vessel. Recipient of the Kaj Franck Design Prize and the Pro Finlandia Medal, Tuominen-Niittylä continues to be celebrated for creating ceramics that unite sculptural expression, technical mastery and quiet Nordic elegance.
