Markku Salo
Markku Salo (b. 1954) is one of contemporary Finnish design's most versatile innovators, known for his rebellious spirit and mastery of diverse materials. Born in Nokia in 1954, Salo first studied fine arts in Kankaanpää before graduating as an industrial designer from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 1979. He began his career designing consumer electronics for Salora—even leading their design department—before making a definitive shift to glass art in 1983 at the legendary Nuutajärvi glassworks. This background in electronics and fine arts gave him a unique, structural perspective. Salo became world-famous for his avant-garde techniques, famously blowing glass directly into metal wire mesh, combining glass with wood, and mastering the delicate pâte de verre (powdered glass) method. Over the decades, he has designed for icons like Iittala, Arabia, and Aarikka, and his works are held in elite permanent collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. A visionary artist, Salo’s immense contributions were honored with the prestigious Kaj Franck Design Prize in 2015.
