These natural formations provided Sarpaneva with a starting point for a group of sculptural glass objects in which geological forms were transformed into abstract compositions of mass, texture and light. Produced at Iittala from 1952 to 1960, the series belongs to the early period in which Sarpaneva established his distinctive approach to art glass. Hiidennyrkki, model 3530, was the first of the works in the group and is one of Sarpaneva's earliest art objects created after joining Iittala. Its name, meaning “Devil's Fist”, refers to the compact, powerful form of the sculpture. The model was produced in two sizes, with its thick glass body and irregular opening emphasising the impression of a naturally formed stone cavity. Hiidennyrkki is one of the defining works of the Hiidenkirnu series and an important example of Sarpaneva's early art glass. Its sculptural form and connection with the Finnish landscape make it particularly sought after by collectors.
